Poland's security policy in the context of Brexit: Bilateral, multilateral or flexilateral?
Brexit and EU foreign policy
By Amélie ZimaEnglish
This article analyses the consequences of Brexit on the defence policy of EU member states, taking Poland as an example. First, it presents the reasons for the initial distrust of Polish governments vis-à-vis the EU's defence capacities. Next, the article studies the reasons that led to the signing of the bilateral defence treaty with the United Kingdom as well as its impact on defence cooperation within the EU and NATO. Finally, it shows that Poland’s security policy reflects less of a pro-Atlanticist bias and distrust of multilateralism than a flexilateral approach where Brexit has a limited impact.
